Brain Injury Mentor Program

One of the hardest things was learning that I was worth recovery. ~ Demi Lavato

What Is A Brain Injury Mentor?

A Brain Injury Mentor connects with you on a one-to-one basis, helps inspire you, and helps you figure out how to overcome roadblocks. They provide you with resources and tools based on their own experiences, connections, and self-advocacy strategies.

They are someone that is knowledgeable about the medical field that can listen, relate, and be supportive, through a research and strengths-based approach, as you navigate your own brain injury process.

It is our CHOICES that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. ~ JK Rowling

The Basics

A brain injury is different from a broken limb or punctured lung. An injury in these areas limit the use of a specific part of your body, but your personality and mental abilities remain unchanged. Most often, these body structures heal and regain their previous function. Brain injuries do not heal like other injuries.

The recovery process is different for everyone. Just as no two people are alike, no two brain injuries are alike. Symptoms may appear right away or may not be present for days or weeks after the injury. Some symptoms last days or weeks, while others can last years, or a lifetime.

Following acute, post-acute, and/or sub-acute rehabilitation, a person with a brain injury may continue to receive outpatient therapies to maintain and enhance his or her recovery. Another important part of recovery from a brain injury is to reintegrate back into the activities of daily life. The more tools and strategies available to a survivor, the stronger their rehabilitation program. The Brain Injury Mentor Program is just one of those additional tools.

Different from Life Coaching services, the Brain Injury Mentor Program participant will receive direct instructions, plans, and a more hands-on approach from their Mentor. While our mentorship is primarily a self-directed program, it is also combined with direct consulting and mentorship.

This program is best utilized by high functioning survivors or those working with them. This means the person using it can go through the program at their own pace, choose what to focus on/utilize and when, and is able to follow through independently.

This program helps bring awareness, encourages self-advocacy, encourages the client to explore options to help facilitate their own personal growth, discovery of self, and may be an effective means of shaping neural pathways.

It is important to remember that recovery and progress does not necessarily mean that things will be back to the way they were before the Trauma. Recovery doesn’t mean there won’t be struggles, setbacks, or deficits. However, it is possible to experience growth, healing, and further rehabilitation. While things may not be the same and may now be different or require modifications throughout your life, there are still possibilities.

It does not matter how slow you go as long as you do not stop; don’t look back, you’re not going that way. No brain injury is too mild to ignore or too serious to lose HOPE. You don’t need to walk alone on the road to recovery. ~Anonymous
